The Tenerife Island Council’s 'Women and the Primary Sector' meeting highlighted the integration of scientific research into agriculture while addressing the gender gap and professional isolation faced by rural women.

The recent 'Women and the Primary Sector' Island Meeting, hosted by the Tenerife Island Council, brought focus to two key issues: the gender gap in rural areas and the importance of integrating scientific research into farming. The event highlighted the work of professionals who are shaping the future of agriculture on the island through both research and hands-on field experience.

Held at the Canary Institute of Agricultural Research (ICIA), the conference served as a vital forum for connecting different parts of the island. By bringing together women from regions as diverse as Anaga, the South, and Isla Baja, the meeting helped bridge the geographical isolation that has historically made it difficult for rural professionals to share knowledge and build support networks.

This year’s event centered on science as a tool for resilience. Moderated by journalist Noemí Galván, a panel of experts showcased projects tackling modern agricultural challenges, including pest management, climate change adaptation, and resource efficiency. This focus on technical progress is a core part of the 'Rural Women of Tenerife' initiative, which aims to professionalize the sector and increase the visibility of women across the agri-food industry.

Jezabel Molina Gil and Betty Coromoto Estévez Cedeño from the University of La Laguna’s Institute of Women's Studies provided an academic perspective, discussing the progress made and the hurdles that remain for women in scientific fields. Valentín González, the Island Councilor for the Primary Sector, emphasized that investing in research is essential for the long-term success of Tenerife’s countryside. Beyond the presentations, the meeting featured collaborative workshops designed to help farmers, livestock breeders, and scientists strengthen their professional connections and share expertise.
