The Tenerife island council has granted 240,000 euros to the Adepac animal shelter to provide immediate financial relief and establish a more stable funding framework for the organization.

A recent injection of public funding for the Adepac animal shelter marks a significant shift in how Tenerife manages animal welfare. The island council (Cabildo) has officially granted 240,000 euros to support the shelter, located in Ravelo, El Sauzal. The funding was approved with majority support—with only Vox abstaining—following an amendment proposed by the socialist group during budget discussions.

This measure provides more than just immediate relief. The grant will help the shelter, which currently cares for over 300 animals, cover essential operating costs for the start of the year. Furthermore, the agreement allows the organization to access future funding through a non-competitive bidding process, offering greater stability to non-profits that provide vital public health services.

For Adepac, this financial support is a welcome relief after a period of extreme pressure on both staff and volunteers. However, the shelter’s management emphasizes that this is only a first step. They warn that long-term sustainability will require regular reviews of funding to ensure it keeps pace with actual maintenance costs. Their goal is to prevent another financial crisis by 2027, noting that managing stray and abandoned animals remains a structural challenge that requires ongoing cooperation between the government and specialized organizations.
