Tenerife Council Designates Mercatenerife Critical Infrastructure Amid New Infrastructure and Heritage Investments
The Tenerife Island Council has designated Mercatenerife as critical infrastructure while simultaneously launching multi-million euro projects to modernize sanitation networks and restore historic water sites across the island.
The Tenerife Island Council has officially designated Mercatenerife as "critical infrastructure" as part of an update to its emergency plans. This move is designed to protect the island’s food supply chain, ensuring that the facility remains a strategic hub during potential crises or disasters.
Beyond food security, the Council is prioritizing water management and heritage preservation. A new investment of over €3.3 million has been approved to modernize sanitation networks in Santa Úrsula and Tacoronte. By upgrading to more efficient, separate sewer systems, the Council aims to improve public health and reduce environmental damage to the coastline, while also easing the financial pressure on local governments.
The Council is also investing in local history through a €901,887 project to restore the area surrounding Los Lavaderos and the Fuente del Chorrillo in Vilaflor. With 90% of the funding provided by the island administration, this project will revitalize a site that served as the heart of daily life and water supply for decades.
The site is historically significant, featuring a fountain dating back to 1903 and early 20th-century water measurement systems that showcase the evolution of local engineering. By restoring this landmark, the Council hopes to honor the essential role water has played in the social development of Tenerife’s towns, successfully blending cultural conservation with modern infrastructure needs.
