Tenerife Council Coordinates Teide Earthquake Response
Tenerife's Island Council is meeting today to coordinate the island's response to nearly a thousand recent earthquakes detected in the Teide National Park, despite experts reporting no unusual volcanic activity.
Tenerife's Island Council is holding a meeting today to update the island's 31 towns and cities on the latest findings from Pevolca, the Canary Islands' volcanic emergency plan. The meeting, starting at 10 AM in the plenary hall, aims to coordinate how the island will respond to recent earthquake activity detected in the Las Cañadas del Teide area.
This meeting follows an assessment last Thursday by Pevolca's scientific committee, which looked into recent earthquake swarms in the Teide National Park. The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has recorded nearly a thousand tremors in this latest episode. It's the ninth such event since 2016 and the third in just the past week.
Since February 7, Tenerife has experienced several series of low-frequency earthquakes, along with three swarms made up of hundreds of 'hybrid' tremors. Despite this, experts say that other volcanic indicators, like gas emissions or ground changes, have not shown any unusual activity so far. After the discussions with local officials, there will be a press briefing for the media.
