Tenerife Council Commissions TF-13 Bajamar Hillside Safety Design
The Tenerife Island Council has commissioned a 60,000-euro project to stabilize a critical hillside section of the vital TF-13 road in Bajamar, complementing ongoing emergency repairs following an April 2025 rockfall.
The Tenerife Island Council is moving forward with its plan to improve road safety on the TF-13, a vital road on the island's northern coast. They have officially hired a company to design a project aimed at making the lower part of the hillside stable and secure. This section of the road runs through Bajamar, above Playa del Arenal, within the municipality of San Cristóbal de La Laguna.
Trazas Ingeniería S.L. has been awarded this study, worth 60,000 euros. It will specifically focus on the road between kilometre markers 16.2 and 16.95. The goal is to address the stability of the lowest part of the hillside in this area, which needs work to keep the road structure safe.
This new project is part of several ongoing efforts by the Island Council. At the same time, emergency repairs are already underway on the upper section of the same hillside, between kilometre markers 16.0 and 16.2. Tacande Geotecnia S.L. is carrying out these works, which cost 838,125.04 euros and are expected to take seven months.
For the upper part of the hillside, the work involves installing seven special barriers designed to absorb energy, with capacities ranging from 250 to 3,000 kilojoules. They also plan to secure two large, unstable rock formations using complex engineering techniques, including steel cables and containment nets.
The need for these repairs became clear after a rockfall on April 15, 2025. This incident led the Island Council to start emergency procedures to reduce risks. The TF-13 is crucial because it's the only road in and out for about 2,700 residents of Punta del Hidalgo. It also connects Bajamar with the rest of the area, making it vital for daily travel and keeping the community connected.
With the official approval of the project for the lower part of the hillside, the island government now has a full plan covering the entire slope at this critical spot on the Tenerife coast. The main goal is to prevent future incidents and make the road much safer for drivers and local residents. Dámaso Arteaga, the Island Councillor for Roads, stressed that these actions are a top priority to ensure safe and reliable traffic on a road that is essential for daily life in the area.
