Tenerife Council Bookstore to Reopen After Five-Year Closure
The Tenerife Island Council Bookstore will reopen on April 30th at its original Santa Cruz location, aiming to revitalize the local cultural scene and provide a dedicated hub for Canarian literature.
The Tenerife Island Council Bookstore is set to reopen on April 30th, marking a significant shift in the island’s cultural policy. Managed by the public entity Ideco, the shop will return to its original location next to the Teatro Baudet in Santa Cruz after being closed for over five years.
This reopening addresses a long-standing concern from local publishers: the lack of a reliable place to find books about the Canary Islands. For years, the bookstore’s closure made it difficult for readers to discover works on local history, science, and literature that are often unavailable in mainstream shops.
During a recent inspection, Vice President Lope Afonso and Culture Commissioner José Carlos Acha explained that the goal is to turn the space into a vibrant cultural hub. Beyond selling books, the Council plans to host regular events once the shop is fully operational. This initiative aims to strengthen the local cultural scene and provide a dedicated space for Canarian identity.
By reopening this site, the Council is not only restoring a local landmark but also supporting the regional publishing industry. With new opening hours designed to better serve the public, the institution hopes to ensure the bookstore becomes a vital resource for sharing knowledge from across the archipelago once again.
