Tenerife Council Awards €9.6 Million Contract for New Social Housing in Granadilla
The Tenerife Island Council has awarded a 9.6 million euro contract to SATOCAN for the construction of 47 social housing units in Granadilla as part of a broader strategy to address the island's ongoing housing crisis.
The Tenerife Island Council is taking further action to address the island’s housing crisis by finalizing a contract to build 47 social housing units in Granadilla. The project has been awarded to the construction firm SATOCAN, with a public investment of 9,616,078.62 euros.
This initiative marks a shift in how the island manages housing. The Council is now taking a direct role in construction—a responsibility previously handled by other government bodies—and is coordinating its efforts with the Canary Islands Housing Institute (ICAVI). Due to the urgent need for more affordable rentals, the Council has significantly increased its building contracts over the first few months of this year.
The Granadilla project is part of a broader plan that includes several major developments. In March, the Council awarded a contract for 226 units in the Cuevas Blancas area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a project worth over 33.5 million euros with a 30-month timeline. Additionally, 24 homes are planned for Arafo, with a budget of 4.6 million euros and an estimated completion time of 23 months.
Beyond new construction, the Council is using other tools to make better use of land and existing properties. Through the "Activa Vivienda" initiative, the Council is working with local governments to prepare properties for social rent; this program is already managing proposals for over 300 homes across 21 municipalities. This is supported by the "Activa Suelo" program, a fund that helps town councils purchase land, which will then be used by ICAVI to develop new rental housing.
