The Tenerife Island Council has approved a €9 million investment to upgrade sanitation systems in Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Arico, and Tegueste, aiming to tackle environmental issues and prevent spills.

The Tenerife Island Council has approved a 9 million euro investment to improve sanitation systems in four of the island's towns, following its latest meeting. This is part of a broader strategy to tackle important environmental issues, such as stopping spills and making public areas pleasant for everyone again.

The approved projects will benefit Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Arico, and Tegueste. Puerto de la Cruz will receive 1.9 million euros to tender for a complete sanitation upgrade in the La Paz area. Meanwhile, the island's capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, will invest over 3.7 million euros to update the sewage system in the La Ladera de San Andrés neighbourhood, a project residents have long called for.

The other two projects, managed through the Municipal Cooperation department, are in the south and north of the island. Arico will get almost 1.6 million euros to finish sanitation work in Porís de Abona, a coastal spot that has grown significantly recently. Similarly, Tegueste will receive over 1.6 million euros, as part of the 2022-2026 Cooperation Plan, for the first stage of its sanitation network in streets crossing Camino Viejo.

The island council has a long-term vision that extends beyond these immediate projects. The President of the Cabildo (Island Government) stressed their commitment to keep working with local councils on this issue. He pointed to a total investment of over 400 million euros to recover industrial water and reuse it for farming, which is crucial for the island's water sustainability.

Besides these public works, the Tenerife Island Water Council (CIATF) is also handling sanitation for private homes. The Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) recently announced a public consultation period for wastewater treatment and discharge from a rural house in Vilaflor de Chasna, two homes in Valle de San Lorenzo (Arona), and a group of four townhouses in San Miguel de Abona.

These efforts are vital because many areas on the island have outdated or non-existent sewage systems. This leads to some towns losing over 50% of their water in their systems. The 2026 budget shows this priority, allocating 6.6 million euros for water infrastructure. This includes two million for improving drinking water supply and four million to support privately funded projects.
