Tenerife Council Approves €80 Million Municipal Cooperation Plan for 2027–2031

The Tenerife Island Council has approved a new Municipal Cooperation Plan for 2027–2031, marking a significant shift in how the island supports its 31 municipalities. With a budget of 80.85 million euros, this plan provides 20 million euros more than the previous cycle, aiming to better connect the island’s various regions.

A key goal of this framework is to ensure all municipalities have fair access to resources. To help smaller towns, the Council has introduced a new funding model: for municipalities with 7,500 residents or fewer, the local contribution for projects will drop to just 5%, with the Island Council covering the remaining 95%. Additionally, every municipality is guaranteed a minimum of 1.5 million euros, ensuring that smaller local governments can afford essential projects despite limited budgets.

To speed up development, the Island Council will now take on more technical responsibilities, including drafting project plans, conducting geotechnical studies, and supervising construction. By covering these costs, the Council is increasing its direct investment to over 64.6 million euros—nearly 79% of the total budget. This change is designed to clear the administrative hurdles that have historically delayed vital infrastructure like sanitation networks and public spaces.

Sonia Hernández, Councilor for Municipal Cooperation, and Vice-President Lope Afonso noted that this model is intended to give local governments more stability for long-term planning. By learning from the 2023–2027 plan, the Council has streamlined its procedures to ensure that investments lead to faster, visible improvements for residents. Ultimately, this record-breaking investment serves as a tool for regional solidarity, helping to balance development across all of Tenerife’s municipalities.
