Tenerife Council Approves €1.17 Million Renovation of Benijos Cold Storage Facility
The Tenerife Island Council has approved a €1.17 million renovation project to modernize the Benijos industrial refrigeration facility, ensuring the long-term stability of the region's potato supply chain.
The Tenerife Island Council has approved the bidding process to renovate the industrial refrigeration facility in Benijos, La Orotava. The project, which has a budget of €1,176,196.32, will be carried out over 2026 and 2027 to repair wear and tear that has accumulated since the facility opened 20 years ago.
This work is vital for the stability of the island's northern agricultural sector. The Benijos cold storage chambers can hold up to two million kilograms of potatoes, acting as a key regulator for the local market. By allowing farmers to store their harvests and release them gradually, the facility prevents market saturation and helps protect farmers' profits.
The current equipment is outdated and has suffered from a lack of maintenance, threatening the future of this logistics hub. The Primary Sector department, led by Valentín González, plans to do more than just replace old machinery; they will install modern, energy-efficient refrigeration systems. This upgrade will ensure the facility remains a reliable part of the agricultural supply chain while meeting modern sustainability standards.
Through this investment, the Island Council aims to protect the processing and sale of potatoes, which is a cornerstone of the local economy. This renovation will preserve a key public asset, ensuring the Benijos center remains fully operational and continues to serve as a strategic storage hub for Tenerife’s farmers for years to come.
