Tenerife Council Acquires Abandoned Añaza Hotel for Zero Euros
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council is taking over the dangerous, long-abandoned "mamotreto de Añaza" hotel, valuing it at zero euros for its owners due to high demolition costs and its history of five deaths.
The Santa Cruz de Tenerife City Council has started the process to take over an abandoned hotel on the Añaza coast. The council has valued the property at zero euros for its owners. This decision is based on the fact that the building has not been used for its intended purpose and will require significant demolition costs. Zaida González, the Councillor for Urban Planning Management, confirmed this valuation.
An official announcement yesterday in the Official Gazette of the Province declared the council's urgent plan to acquire this unfinished property. Locally known as the 'mamotreto de Añaza', the building is located on Mayantigo Street in the Acorán neighborhood, Southwest district. The plans for this takeover are available on the city's digital platforms, and the public has one month to submit any objections.
While the land itself is valued at 47,992 euros, the estimated 2.3 million euros needed to demolish the structure means the owners will receive no compensation. Councillor González clarified that the land cannot be used for new construction, so after deducting the high demolition costs, there is no value left for the owners.
The property has approximately 430 registered owners, holding a total of 900 shares. These owners come from various European countries, primarily Germany, in addition to Spain. Reaching all these owners, particularly those living abroad, is proving to be an administrative challenge. To address this, the City Council has hired translation services and is seeking advice from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Construction of the 22-story complex, originally planned as timeshare apartments, began in 1973 by a German company. However, work stopped just one year later, leaving the structure abandoned for over half a century. In 2018, the City Council took steps to mark the building as dangerous and fenced off its perimeter. They also began trying to find the owners, and these warnings remain in place today.
Tragically, this concrete structure has been the site of five deaths over the years. The most recent incident occurred last December, when a teenager died after falling from the fifth floor after entering the building with friends.
