Tenerife Completes €1.3 Million Sustainable Renovation of Teide National Park Parking Lots
The Tenerife Island Council has completed a 1.3 million euro renovation of Teide National Park's parking facilities, utilizing sustainable volcanic materials to improve traffic management and environmental protection.
The recent renovation of the La Ruleta and Cañada Blanca parking lots in Teide National Park marks a major shift in how the island manages visitor traffic. The Tenerife Island Council announced the completion of the project, which cost over 1.3 million euros and was funded by the European Union’s Next Generation program.
The project aims to better manage the high volume of visitors in one of the island's most popular areas. The new layout covers 7,500 square meters and provides 80 parking spaces for private cars and 14 for buses. The work, overseen by local officials Blanca Pérez and Pedro Millán, also included upgrading over 5,000 square meters of road and expanding sidewalks.
This renovation is part of a broader strategy to encourage visitors to use public or group transport rather than private cars. This shift is vital for protecting the park’s fragile environment. To minimize the project's ecological footprint, the builders avoided standard concrete. Instead, they used a circular economy approach, repurposing natural volcanic stone from the surrounding area. This choice not only helps the parking lots blend into the landscape but also ensures the structures can withstand the harsh high-altitude weather.
As concerns grow regarding the number of visitors the park can sustain, this project highlights a commitment to balancing tourism with environmental preservation. By using native materials and focusing on better accessibility, the council is moving toward more sustainable, less invasive ways to manage one of Spain’s most protected natural sites.
