Tenerife Communities Celebrate Traditional Heritage with Island-Wide Festivals

Tenerife’s cultural scene is seeing a vibrant revival of local traditions this Sunday, September 6. Across the island, communities are coming together to celebrate their heritage, with a strong focus on historical dress and religious customs that define the local identity.

In the south, the town of Los Abrigos in Granadilla de Abona is celebrating the festival of San Blasito. The day’s events kick off at 1:00 p.m. near Agua Dulce beach, with a procession moving toward the local pier. The festivities continue throughout the afternoon, featuring a performance by Tomás Duque at 4:00 p.m. and an open-air dance starting at 7:00 p.m., with music from the orchestras Sensación Gomera and Nueva Ilusión.

Meanwhile, in the north, Los Realejos is hosting the La Cruz del Castaño festivities. This celebration of Canarian heritage begins at 3:00 p.m. with a procession from Lomo La Jara. Participants will carry the statues of Saint Anthony the Great and the Virgin of the Cross to the main square, with attendees encouraged to wear traditional clothing to help preserve local customs. The evening will wrap up with performances by the group Teide Swing and the orchestra Son Sin Límite.
