Tenerife Commits €46M to Culture, Accessibility in 2026
Tenerife's Department of Culture, Museums, and Sports will manage 46 million euros, 6.5% of the island's 2026 budget, to enhance cultural accessibility, promote artistic creation, and develop infrastructure including a new Arts District.
Tenerife's Department of Culture, Museums, and Sports will manage 46 million euros in 2026. This amount represents 6.5% of the island's total budget for the coming year. The department stated that this budget reaffirms the island government's strong commitment to making culture accessible to everyone, promoting artistic creation, and strengthening community ties through cultural activities.
José Carlos Acha, the island's Minister of Culture, Museums, and Sports, announced that over eight million euros are set aside for cultural investments next year. This funding aims to modernize facilities and support key projects.
Minister Acha emphasized that "Tenerife must be an island where culture reaches everyone, without exception." He explained that the budget reflects their dedication to expanding cultural offerings, supporting local talent, and bringing cultural events closer to every municipality, neighborhood, and community. He added that "investing in culture is investing in identity, social cohesion, and opportunities for those who create and work in the sector."
A key focus will be developing the Arts District, designed as a vibrant hub for local artists to meet, innovate, and showcase their work. This new cultural center will boost artistic activity and strengthen connections between residents, artists, and cultural organizations.
The Cabildo also plans to enhance programs and activities at major cultural venues like the Auditorio de Tenerife, TEA Tenerife Espacio de las Artes, and other museums it manages, solidifying their role as leading cultural drivers. The artistic units – the Auditorium, Island Music Board, and the Autonomous Organization of Museums and Centers – will receive a combined 21,832,214 euros. This funding will support their cultural work, aiming for greater public participation, integration, and inclusion in Tenerife society, the minister noted.
In 2026, the Cabildo will launch about a dozen support programs and grants, totaling six million euros. These funds will boost artists, cultural groups, festivals, community projects, and training activities. Among the new initiatives is the opening of a new Cabildo Bookstore, which will serve as a hub for sharing ideas, literature, and books published in the Canary Islands.
Additionally, an Island Plan for Folkloric Groups will be developed to preserve, revitalize, and highlight Tenerife's traditions and cultural heritage. José Carlos Acha stressed, "Our folklore and our cultural identity deserve firm protection and a forward-looking approach. We are working to ensure that Tenerife remains a benchmark in creativity, heritage, and cultural diversity."
He added that a significant cultural infrastructure plan, amounting to 6.7 million euros, supports all these efforts. This plan will provide suitable and permanent venues for cultural activities in towns across the island.
The Minister of Culture, Museums, and Sports concluded by stating that the goal is to provide resources for cultural creation and to spread culture more widely, making it easier for everyone across the island to access.
