The Tenerife Island Council has commissioned a 258,405-euro design project for an underpass on the TF-5 motorway to alleviate chronic traffic congestion and improve public transport efficiency in Santa Cruz.

Tenerife is set to tackle chronic traffic congestion at the entrance to Santa Cruz. The Island Council has commissioned Proyma Consultores to design an underpass for the TF-5 motorway, a project costing 258,405 euros.

The plan targets the area around Calle Áurea Díaz Flores, where heavy traffic often creates bottlenecks. By moving bus lanes underground, the project aims to bypass surface traffic lights and intersections, ensuring public transport runs on time. This is a vital upgrade, as more than 1,700 bus trips pass through this junction every day.

Island Council President Rosa Dávila stated that this infrastructure is essential to making public transport a more competitive alternative to private cars. Mobility Councilor Eulalia García noted that the project is technically complex, as it requires balancing the new bus route with a reorganization of surface traffic to avoid further disruption in one of the island’s busiest areas.

The design process will take 15 months. The first 13 months will be spent analyzing potential solutions, followed by two months to finalize the construction plans. The contract also includes requirements to ensure job stability for the engineering team.

This initiative comes as Tenerife faces increasing pressure on its road network. By streamlining bus access to the capital, officials hope to reduce travel times for passengers and ease the ripple effect of traffic jams that frequently affect the Northern motorway.
