Tenerife Coffee Producers Revitalize Rural Economy Through Specialty Farming

The "Oceánico" project in Tenerife is revitalizing rural agriculture by transforming specialty coffee production into a thriving, high-value business through technical innovation and microclimate management.

Niche farming is breathing new life into the primary sector in the Canary Islands, particularly in smaller, rural municipalities. A prime example is the "Oceánico" project in San Juan de la Rambla, where the Abreu Rodríguez brothers have turned coffee growing in Tenerife from a mere hobby into a thriving specialty business. By taking advantage of the unique soil and climate in the island's north, they are creating a high-value product that stands out in the market.

The project’s success relies on carefully managing the local microclimate across 2,000 plants grown on terraces between 150 and 300 meters above sea level. After working with Nicaraguan experts to study local weather patterns, the brothers used protective netting and the natural landscape to shield their crops from harsh trade winds and dry spells. Despite early setbacks—including losing harvests to drought and dust haze—the operation is growing rapidly. After producing 300 kilos of green coffee in 2025, they expect to harvest between 800 and 1,000 kilos this season.

The brothers are also professionalizing their post-harvest work. By using controlled fermentation techniques rather than traditional drying methods, they have created a dozen distinct flavor profiles. This focus on quality and origin is a smart move, as it appeals to the growing market for specialty coffee where consumers value traceability.

Currently, the business is self-funded through personal savings, with the brothers selling directly to customers online and through select retailers. Beyond profit, the project is helping to keep young people in rural areas, proving that entrepreneurship can drive local development. With plans to semi-industrialize their processes, the Oceánico brand is setting a new standard for how technical innovation can turn traditional farming into a competitive, modern business.
