The May 3rd festivities in northern Tenerife continue to blend centuries-old religious traditions with modern innovation, drawing thousands to Los Realejos and Puerto de la Cruz to celebrate local cultural identity.

The May 3rd festivities have once again proven to be a cornerstone of cultural identity in northern Tenerife, according to reports from Los Realejos and Puerto de la Cruz. Beyond their religious roots, these celebrations highlight how Canary Island towns successfully preserve centuries-old traditions while blending them with modern touches, such as video mapping, to boost both community spirit and tourism.

In Los Realejos, the highlight was the display of over 300 crosses throughout the town. The event relies heavily on local involvement, particularly in the La Cruz Santa neighborhood, where the festivities kicked off with a performance combining theater and synchronized fireworks. The main event followed a service at the Apostle Santiago parish, ending with a seven-minute fireworks show—the largest in the Canary Islands. Crowds gathered in large numbers at the chapels on El Sol and El Medio streets, which remain the focal points for visitors.

Meanwhile, Puerto de la Cruz wrapped up its own patron saint celebrations. Following four days of public events, a procession of the Holy Cross through the old town marked the official handover of organizing duties. Mayor Leopoldo Afonso was appointed as the "Prioste" (steward) for the 2027 edition, a role formalized by signing the Book of Priostes. This tradition ensures the festival's future and strengthens the bond between local government and the community, keeping a custom alive that continues to draw thousands of people to the city each year.
