Tenerife Celebrates Cultural Heritage with Weekend Festival Lineup
Tenerife celebrates a vibrant weekend of traditional festivals, including the Corpus Christi festivities in La Orotava, the Malpaís Magos Ball in Candelaria, and historic pilgrimages in La Laguna and Granadilla de Abona.
Tenerife’s festival season hits a high note this weekend, highlighting how these popular celebrations bring the community together and boost the local economy. Across the island, residents are preparing for a series of events that blend religious tradition with local customs, helping to keep the archipelago’s cultural heritage alive.
La Orotava is the center of the action, celebrating Corpus Christi and Saint Isidore the Laborer. The festivities kick off at 9:00 p.m. with the Grand Magos Ball at the Plaza del V Centenario, where guests are required to wear traditional dress for a communal dinner and live "parranda" music. Other highlights include the Taifa Ball, musical performances at the Escultor Estévez Bridge, and a 9:30 p.m. event hosted by the Liceo de Taoro Society featuring the Tejina Orchestra. From 11:00 p.m., the party spreads to Calle Calvario, Avenida de Canarias, and Plaza Franchy Alfaro, with live music from groups including Fórmula Latina, Malibu, Tropi, Nueva Era Latina, Maquinaria, and Klimbara.
On Saturday, the focus moves to Candelaria. Starting at 8:00 p.m., the Villa Mariana will host the Malpaís Magos Ball in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. Traditional attire is mandatory for this event, which features performances by Parranda Los Muchachos, Grupo Pa Ti, and soloist Manuel Dorta.
Sunday features two traditional pilgrimages. In the north, La Laguna hosts the Guamasa Pilgrimage at 12:00 p.m., following a route that begins and ends at the local church, passing through Calle Santa Rosa de Lima, Camino El Majano, and Paseo de las Acacias.
Meanwhile, in the south, Granadilla de Abona celebrates its 48th Pilgrimage in Honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. The day begins at noon with a mass at the main church, featuring the Parranda Chasnera and the Herreño Dancers, along with a charitable collection for Caritas. After the procession through the historic center to Los Hinojeros, the celebration concludes with an open-air dance featuring orchestras such as Amanecer de la Gomera, Tropin, Acapulco, and Wamampy. As with the other weekend events, attendees are expected to wear traditional clothing.
