Tenerife Celebrates Canary Islands Day With Island-Wide Cultural Festivities
Tenerife is celebrating Canary Islands Day with a weekend of traditional folk dances, pilgrimages, and cultural festivities held across various towns on the island.
Canary Islands Day is proving to be a major boost for Tenerife’s social and economic life this year. Beyond the fun, the festivities serve as an important way to preserve local traditions, with thousands of residents expected to dress in traditional attire and take part in events across the island.
The celebrations run from Friday through Sunday, with activities spread out across many different towns. On Friday, the focus is on traditional "bailes de magos" and "taifas" (folk dances). Key locations include:
- Punta del Hidalgo: Plaza de la Iglesia (9:00 PM) – table reservations required via the local parish.
- Adeje: Plaza de España (8:30 PM).
- Candelaria: Town Hall and Plaza de los Pescadores (9:30 PM) – tickets must be purchased online in advance.
- Los Cristianos: Plaza del Pescador (8:30 PM).
- Arafo: Plaza San Juan Degollado (9:00 PM).
Saturday’s schedule remains busy with events across the island. In La Laguna, Barrio Nuevo kicks off at 1:30 PM, followed by a dance in Tejina’s Plaza de la Iglesia at 9:00 PM. Other highlights include a dinner in El Sauzal’s Plaza El Calvario (8:30 PM), a dance in Los Silos behind the old convent (9:00 PM), and a "baile de taifa" in Granadilla de Abona.
The weekend concludes on Sunday with two of the island’s most iconic pilgrimages:
- Los Realejos: Honors Saint Isidore the Laborer and Saint Mary of the Head. Mass begins at 12:00 PM at the Parroquia Matriz del Apóstol Santiago, followed by a procession and an open-air dance in the Plaza Viera y Clavijo.
- Las Mercedes (La Laguna): Mass starts at 11:00 AM at the local school, with the procession to the town square beginning at 12:00 PM.
This wide-reaching program, featuring many folk groups and orchestras, highlights the importance of cultural identity in the Canary Islands. Organizers remind attendees that wearing traditional dress is required to enter many of these venues. Additionally, specific access controls will be in place, particularly regarding the protection of minors under 16 at nighttime events.
