Tenerife Carnival Child Neglect Prompts Investigation
Serious child neglect cases at Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival's Piñata Saturday, where police rescued vulnerable children from intoxicated parents, have prompted an investigation by the Minor's Prosecutor's Office.
Piñata Saturday at the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival saw a huge crowd, but the celebration was marred by serious cases of child neglect. These incidents have led to an investigation by the Minor's Prosecutor's Office. According to the local police in Tenerife, officers had to step in to protect two young children who were in very vulnerable situations because of their parents' condition.
In one instance, police found a child, about three years old, at the festival with his mother, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and drugs. The child was immediately taken to safety and brought to the Carnival Hospital. He stayed there while social services and police tried to find a family member who could look after him safely.
A second, equally serious incident happened in the Plaza del Príncipe. People called the police after seeing a couple who were very drunk. Nearby, a six-year-old girl was sleeping alone in a stroller, surrounded by the noise and crowds. In both cases, the local police unit that works with the Minor's Prosecutor's Office is handling the investigation. Their goal is to ensure the children's safety and determine what legal responsibility the parents have.
These incidents happened on a very busy night for the emergency response team, who helped 123 people in total. The health report shows a worrying trend, with many of these calls related to alcohol and drug use.
Security teams also had to handle violent situations. 'Purple Points,' which are support stations, advised two women who had experienced gender-based violence, though they decided not to file a formal complaint at the time. There were also 17 calls for help due to physical assaults and other injuries from street fights.
While Piñata Saturday drew nearly 400,000 people, confirming its popularity, the child neglect cases have deeply worried authorities. The Minor's Prosecutor's Office investigation will now decide the future of the children rescued on a night where, for some, the party went too far, crossing the line of parental responsibility.
