Tenerife Capital Approves New €2.7 Million 'Celia Cruz Square' Project
Tenerife’s capital has approved a €2.7 million EU-funded project to build "Celia Cruz Square" in the Cabo Llanos district while simultaneously launching a €665,000 infrastructure renovation in Llano del Moro.
Tenerife’s capital is set for a major urban makeover. The city has officially approved plans for a new "Celia Cruz Square" in the Cabo Llanos district, a project designed by architects Romén Álvarez and Cristina González. The square aims to provide much-needed green space for the area’s growing residential and office community.
The project is fully funded by a €2.7 million grant from the European Union. Carlos Tarife, the Councilor for Public Services, noted that this funding model allows the city to improve its infrastructure without placing a burden on local taxpayers. The council plans to put the project out to tender in April, with construction expected to take 18 months.
While the project is moving forward, it has sparked some internal debate. The Urban Planning Department wants to include underground parking to meet general planning requirements, but the Mobility Department is concerned this may conflict with the city’s sustainable transport goals. To help manage traffic, the design includes an underground road connecting Los Llanos 6 and Adán Martín Menis streets, which will help reduce congestion near the Torres buildings while keeping the park pedestrian-friendly.
Meanwhile, the City Council is also focusing on the outskirts of the city. A €665,000 renovation has been approved for Juan Marín Vives Street in Llano del Moro. This long-awaited project will finally bring essential services—such as sewage, drainage, and lighting—to the area. Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez and district councilor Javier Rivero stated that this work is part of a broader effort to balance investment across the city, specifically improving safety and access near the Matías Llabrés Verd school.
