Tenerife’s Cabildo Games have reached a record 12,386 youth participants for the 2025-2026 season, with girls accounting for over 58% of registrations in a diverse program spanning 29 sporting disciplines.

Grassroots sports in Tenerife are thriving, with the latest Cabildo Games setting a new record for youth participation. According to the island’s government, the 2025-2026 season saw 12,386 registered athletes—an increase of 809 participants compared to the previous year.

The data also highlights a growing trend toward female leadership in sports. For the third year in a row, girls have outnumbered boys, making up 58.02% of all registrations. This shift reflects both the success of initiatives promoting equal access and a change in how Tenerife’s youth choose to spend their leisure time.

The scale of this year’s event was impressive, featuring 244 competitions held over 37 days across 28 municipalities. The program offered a wide variety of activities, ranging from traditional sports like Canarian wrestling and athletics to modern options such as surfing, freestyle skating, and water polo. With 51,490 recorded uses of facilities—an increase of 5,472 from last year—it is clear that the program remains highly popular with local families.

Yolanda Moliné, the Island Councilor for Sports, emphasized the program's social value, noting that it serves as a vital tool for teaching respect, hard work, and teamwork. As the Cabildo prepares to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the games next year, the initiative remains the cornerstone of youth sports in Tenerife. By offering 29 different disciplines—including chess, rhythmic gymnastics, rugby, triathlon, and sailing—the program continues to engage a diverse group of children and teenagers aged 6 to 16.
