Tenerife Cabildo Approves Record 120 Public Homes
The Cabildo of Tenerife is poised to approve the construction of 120 new public homes in Güímar and San Miguel, marking the island's largest public housing initiative to date.
The Cabildo of Tenerife is set to approve the building of 120 new homes. This comes after the Governing Council gives its final approval this week for the plans and construction work for two public housing projects. These homes will be in Güímar (30) and San Miguel (90).
Lope Afonso, the Vice President of the Cabildo, stated that these new projects are part of a larger effort. They add to the 44 homes (worth nearly 10 million euros) already planned for Los Realejos and Santiago del Teide. This work is all part of an agreement between the Cabildo and the Canary Islands Government, via the Canarian Housing Institute. This agreement allows for up to 257 public homes to be built across various towns in Tenerife, with an overall budget of about 40 million euros.
Specifically, the Governing Council will approve contracts for 30 homes in Güímar, costing 5,432,125.03 euros, and 90 homes in San Miguel, costing 15,669,027.65 euros.
Lope Afonso and Sonia Hernández, the Minister of Housing, both highlighted that these contracts represent the biggest public housing initiative in Tenerife's history. They said it's a major step forward for the island's housing policy and shows real progress in addressing one of the public's main worries: finding a home.
Afonso stressed that the Cabildo is delivering on a promise made at the start of its term. Back then, they emphasized the Cabildo's crucial role in helping citizens with the challenges of finding affordable housing.
Minister Sonia Hernández added that this project is just one of several initiatives from the island's Housing department. Other programs include 'Activa' Land and Housing and the Housing Rehabilitation Program. The goal, she said, is to establish the Cabildo as an effective resource for meeting the housing needs of the public.
