Tenerife's Cabildo is providing €22,000 to support eight local Carnival rondallas, a unique musical tradition, in their performances across the island.

Tenerife's Cabildo, through its Culture, Museums, and Sports department, is backing the island's Carnival rondallas with €22,000. This funding will help eight rondallas, a unique local tradition, perform in various towns during the next festival.

This support continues a partnership between the Cabildo and the rondallas that started in 2010. The then-president, Ricardo Melchior, personally committed to helping these groups, who were struggling with travel and performing across the island. José Antonio Pérez, president of the Federation of Rondallas and Peña del Lunes, recalled these challenges.

Recently, José Carlos Acha, the island's culture councilor, met with the directors of these musical groups, a meeting that also saw the renewal of agreements with several lyrical societies.

The Federation of Rondallas of the Tenerife Carnival, which includes Peña del Lunes, Masa Coral Tinerfeña, Unión Artística El Cabo, Los Aceviños, Gran Tinerfe, Mamels, Las Walkirias, and Orfeón La Paz, will manage the funding.

Acha highlighted the significance of this musical style in the island's celebrations. "We appreciate the hard work of this Carnival tradition, which originated in Tenerife and is a defining feature of our festivities. Supporting the rondallas year-round is crucial for their continued existence," he said.

To further support the groups, the rondallas and the culture councilor are exploring the idea of creating joint performances between music bands and lyrical ensembles, starting next year. These collaborative pieces are anticipated to be showcased throughout 2027.
