The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce has confirmed that June 12 will not be a public holiday during the Pope's visit, urging businesses to maintain operations through flexible scheduling and remote work.

June 12, the day Pope Leo XIV visits Tenerife, will not be a public holiday. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Chamber of Commerce has confirmed that businesses will remain open, prioritizing economic continuity despite the logistical challenges the visit will bring.

The decision reflects a pragmatic approach to the island's economy. While security measures and road closures—particularly near the port where the ceremony will take place—will disrupt travel, the Chamber insists that the island must keep running. President Santiago Sesé noted that while flexibility is important, sectors like retail, hospitality, and transport require staff to be physically present.

To help employees reach their workplaces, the Chamber is recommending a flexible approach. They suggest that companies allow teleworking where possible, mirroring the plans of public administrations. For roles that require on-site attendance, Director General Lola Pérez encourages businesses to adjust shifts or plan alternative routes to ensure the city continues to function smoothly.

This decision highlights the balance between hosting major events and maintaining productivity. While officials have advised residents to limit unnecessary travel, the private sector maintains that a public holiday would be unnecessary. The Chamber of Commerce believes that by combining remote work with careful scheduling, Tenerife can host this significant event without halting local business activity.
