Tenerife’s TITSA bus network has emerged as a national leader in public transport, recording an 81% surge in demand and high user satisfaction following a major modernization drive and the introduction of free travel.

Public transport in Tenerife is reaching a historic milestone, becoming a national leader in the sector. According to the first Interurban Public Transport Barometer, conducted by Corporación 5, demand for the TITSA bus network has surged by nearly 81% since 2022. This growth reflects a major shift in how residents choose to travel.

The study shows that Tenerife’s service is rated higher than the national average. While the Spanish average score is 6.3 out of 10, Tenerife’s network earns a 7.4, with users praising its cleanliness, safety, frequency, and value. This satisfaction has built strong loyalty: 93% of those surveyed use the bus for their daily commutes, with seven out of ten passengers riding at least three days a week—a rate well above the national average.

Modernization has been central to this success. With 187 lines and over 4,000 stops, the network has integrated new technology, including air conditioning, information screens, USB ports, and options for contactless payments and pet travel. Additionally, the Cabildo of Tenerife is prioritizing sustainability by replacing older diesel buses with hybrid models. Following the addition of 257 new units between 2024 and 2025, the fleet now includes 298 hybrid vehicles.

The introduction of free travel in 2023 served as a major turning point, with 79% of passengers taking advantage of the measure. While Cabildo President Rosa Dávila noted that these results establish the island as a transport benchmark, the report also highlights areas for improvement.

To ensure the system remains sustainable, the report outlines six strategic goals. Key priorities include improving transfer efficiency, providing better real-time information, continuing the shift to electric vehicles, and increasing capacity on the busiest routes, where overcrowding has reached 17%. These recommendations will guide future planning to ensure the island’s transport network remains efficient and meets the needs of its growing population.
