The Canary Islands are bracing for a brief heatwave and poor air quality as a mass of Saharan dust pushes temperatures in Tenerife toward 34°C.

The Canary Islands are bracing for a period of intense heat and poor air quality, with the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) warning that Tenerife will face extreme conditions over the next 48 hours. Temperatures are set to reach 34°C in some areas—more typical of early summer than spring.

This heatwave is being driven by a mass of Saharan air, which is also bringing suspended dust to the region. While strong winds are expected to hit the south of the island, they should ease as the weekend progresses. The forecast also suggests some cloud cover and a slight chance of light rain in central areas early Saturday and Sunday.

Experts note that these warm air intrusions are common during seasonal transitions, highlighting the islands' susceptibility to such weather patterns. Conditions are expected to improve by Monday, as the dust clears and temperatures begin to stabilize.

While the northern part of Tenerife will see a more noticeable drop in temperatures due to local wind patterns, other islands—particularly Lanzarote and Fuerteventura—will remain unusually warm for this time of year. By early next week, however, temperatures across the archipelago should return to more moderate levels, bringing an end to this brief period of intense heat.
