Tenerife’s Island Council has announced a 1.4 million euro funding boost to expand dependency services and increase capacity for elderly care across the island.

Tenerife’s care network is set for a funding boost to help address gaps in dependency services, the Island Council announced following its latest government session. By restructuring its collaboration agreement with the regional Ministry of Social Welfare and adding 1.4 million euros in European Next Generation funds, the total budget will rise to 16.6 million euros.

This investment will create 18 new socio-sanitary spots, increasing the island’s total capacity from 181 to 199 places across residential homes and day centers. In addition to expanding capacity, the Council will use part of these funds to upgrade and improve existing facilities across various municipalities. Using these recovery funds highlights the local government's commitment to sustaining essential public services, which have faced significant pressure since the pandemic.

Separately, the Council has approved an additional 500,000 euros for the Island Office for the Elderly, bringing its annual budget to 1.9 million euros. This increase is designed to meet the growing demand for specialized information and social support programs for older residents.

Managed by Sinpromi with a strategy extending to 2029, the Office for the Elderly is being strengthened through the finalized dependency agreement with the Canary Islands Government. The Council aims to make this office the cornerstone of its active aging policies, ensuring long-term financial stability for a service that is increasingly vital as Tenerife’s population ages.
