Tenerife Boosts Recycling Efficiency Through AI and Public Engagement
Tenerife is modernizing its waste management through AI-driven sorting and increased public engagement to effectively handle rising waste volumes and promote long-term sustainability.
Tenerife is updating how it manages waste to keep up with the island’s growing population and tourism. According to the Tenerife Island Council, the amount of household waste rose from 526,664 tons in 2023 to 558,519 tons in 2025. While this is a 6% increase, officials consider it manageable given the island's growth.
This progress is largely due to upgrades at the Tenerife Environmental Complex. By using automated sorting and artificial intelligence, the island has significantly improved its recycling efforts. Between 2023 and 2026, the recycling rate for paper, cardboard, and plastic jumped by over 50%. These improvements have reduced the amount of waste sent to landfills and made the island’s waste collection system more efficient, which is vital for a limited island territory.
Beyond technology, the island is focusing on public awareness to move away from a "throwaway" culture. Residents are getting more involved: in 2025, the island’s civic amenity sites (puntos limpios) saw 338,000 visitors—a 21% increase since 2022—and processed 63,128 tons of waste. Programs like the Truec@ exchange platform and various educational workshops, which reached over 3,400 people last year, are helping to make recycling and reuse a part of daily life.
Sustainability remains a top priority for the island’s leaders. Because Tenerife’s environment is fragile, the government is working to ensure that waste management supports long-term environmental protection. By combining new technology with public education, the island is successfully transitioning toward a more efficient and sustainable future.
