Tenerife Bishop Warns Against Dehumanization and Ethical Risks of AI

During the recent feast of the Virgin of Candelaria, the Bishop of Tenerife, Eloy Santiago, used his homily to warn against the ethical challenges posed by rapid technological advancement and modern ideologies.
The Bishop expressed concern over the "dehumanization" he sees in how we manage resources and automated decision-making today. He argued that integrating artificial intelligence into politics and economics risks reducing human dignity to mere data, prioritizing efficiency and profit over the well-being of individuals. He warned that this "technocratic mentality," when stripped of an ethical foundation, treats people as disposable assets to be manipulated for short-term gain.
In his address, the Bishop also criticized power structures that use totalitarian rhetoric to prioritize wealth and self-interest over social unity. He suggested that the current global instability, marked by a culture of indifference and conflict, is a sign that society has lost its moral compass.
Moving beyond local issues, the Bishop addressed the humanitarian crises in Venezuela and Colombia, which have been worsened by recent natural disasters. Referencing his recent pastoral visit, "Lift Your Gaze," he urged the community to show solidarity with these nations. He called for fraternity as a necessary response to political instability and social exclusion.
The Bishop concluded his message by calling for a return to humanism, urging society to resist trends that threaten the fundamental respect for human life and individual freedom.
