Tenerife Begins Construction on New Tegueste Recycling Facility
The Tenerife Island Council has begun construction on a new €778,000 recycling facility in Tegueste to improve waste management accessibility and reduce illegal dumping across the island.
Tenerife is upgrading its waste management system with new facilities in the island’s northeast. The Tenerife Island Council has begun construction on a new "Clean Point" in Tegueste, aiming to address a long-standing lack of local recycling services. Work is already underway, with a budget of €778,000 and an expected completion time of eight months.
This project is part of a push to decentralize waste treatment. Blanca Pérez, the area’s councilor, explained that residents previously had to travel long distances to reach recycling facilities. By making these services more accessible, the Council hopes to encourage better recycling habits and reduce illegal dumping in the countryside. Alejandro Molowny, head of the Waste Department, added that these centers are essential for ensuring that materials are recycled rather than sent to landfills.
Beyond logistics, the project could eventually lead to lower municipal waste fees, depending on local regulations. The Tegueste facility will join an existing network of eight centers across the island, with further sites planned for Arico, San Miguel, Fasnia, Granadilla, Vilaflor, Guía de Isora, and the area near Los Rodeos.
The current network is already making a significant impact; last year, 339,000 users deposited 63,000 tons of waste. By keeping the service free, the Council aims to maintain high participation rates, making these facilities a cornerstone of Tenerife’s environmental strategy for the coming decade.
