Tenerife Awards Contract for New Modernized Slaughterhouse Project
The Tenerife Island Council has awarded a 580,000-euro contract to design a modern slaughterhouse in La Laguna, marking a key step in upgrading the island's livestock infrastructure to meet EU standards.
Tenerife’s plan to modernize its livestock infrastructure has reached a key milestone. The Island Council (Cabildo) has signed a 580,000-euro contract with the public company Tragsatec to design a new island slaughterhouse. This project aims to fix the regulatory and technical issues facing current facilities, with the final plans due within 15 months.
Upgrading these facilities is vital for meeting European Union safety and animal welfare standards, which are essential for the future of the island’s agricultural sector. The new complex will be built at the Los Rodeos Regional Agricultural Industrial Estate in La Laguna, a location already central to the industry. The design features a 6,000-square-meter facility spread across two floors on a 17,000-square-meter plot. It will include three separate slaughter lines for cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs, with space to expand in the future.
The project is moving quickly thanks to its status as a priority for the island. To keep things on track, the Island Directorate of Strategic Projects—led by Alicia Leirachá—is managing the work. Their primary goal is to cut through the red tape that has historically delayed major public works in Tenerife.
This slaughterhouse is one of seven priority projects currently on the Cabildo’s agenda. Other key initiatives include redeveloping the former Santa Cruz refinery site, building a Film City in Adeje, upgrading infrastructure in Puerto de la Cruz, improving energy and logistics networks, protecting the coast at Las Galletas from climate change, and constructing a new animal shelter. Through these efforts, the Cabildo hopes to address long-standing needs while balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.
