Tenerife Awards €8.1 Million Contract to Modernize La Laguna Interchange

The La Laguna Interchange in Tenerife is set for a major upgrade. The Island Council has officially awarded the €8.1 million contract to modernize the facility, which is a vital hub for local transport. The project aims to accommodate a massive surge in demand: since the terminal opened in 2011, annual passenger numbers have more than doubled, rising from 39 million to over 87 million.

A joint venture between COBRA Infraestructuras Hidráulicas and IMESAPI won the contract after a competitive bidding process involving eight companies. Construction is expected to begin in mid-November, following a standard 15-day legal review period, and will take approximately 20 months to complete.

The primary challenge is keeping the station fully operational during construction, as it serves 25,000 people and handles nearly 1,400 bus movements every weekday. To manage this, a temporary terminal with 30 bays will be established between Avenida Ángel Guimerá and land provided by the University of La Laguna.

Supported by Island President Rosa Dávila and Minister of Mobility Eulalia García, the renovation will include expanded waiting areas, updated bus bays, and new glass enclosures to protect passengers from the elements. The project also covers structural repairs, new flooring, improved drainage and lighting, and a more energy-efficient facade.

Key upgrades include an AI-powered accessibility system for the hearing impaired, a direct link to the Padre Anchieta pedestrian bridge, and new elevators and stairs. The contractors have also committed to a three-year warranty extension, ensuring the long-term durability of the station as it adapts to the needs of Tenerife’s growing population.
