The Canary Islands government has awarded a €58.18 million contract to Ferrovial Construcción and Asyota Asfaltos y Obras to expand the TF-5 highway and redesign key interchanges to alleviate chronic traffic congestion near Tenerife North Airport.

Efforts to ease traffic on the TF-5—one of the Canary Islands' busiest roads—are moving into a critical stage. The regional government has officially awarded the contract to expand the stretch between Guamasa and Tenerife North Airport to a joint venture between Ferrovial Construcción and Asyota Asfaltos y Obras. The project will cost 58.18 million euros, including taxes.

This final price is significantly lower than the initial 66.4 million euro estimate, saving the public over 8.2 million euros. The project goes beyond simply adding a third lane toward Santa Cruz de Tenerife; it includes a complete redesign of the Guamasa and San Lázaro interchanges. The goal is to fix the severe bottlenecks that occur where traffic heading to the airport meets the main flow of commuters.

Currently, drivers heading to the airport must perform U-turns at the San Lázaro interchange, which disrupts the flow of the main highway. The new design will create a direct connection to the airport, allowing traffic to enter the facility without slowing down long-distance drivers. This change addresses a long-standing need for the Tacoronte and La Laguna areas, where traffic levels have long outgrown the road's original design.

This project is a vital step toward reducing the daily gridlock that affects thousands of drivers in the north of the island. By separating airport traffic from those heading to the capital, officials expect to see shorter travel times and improved road safety. This should reduce the frequent accidents caused by sudden braking and complex lane changes, marking a major improvement for this strategic part of the island’s road network.
