Tenerife Authorities on Alert Over Anonymous Online Call for Halloween Protest
Authorities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are on alert following anonymous social media calls for a protest on October 31, amid concerns that recent urban unrest in other Spanish cities could spread to the island.
Authorities are on alert following anonymous social media posts suggesting that recent urban unrest seen elsewhere in Spain could spread to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. An unsigned flyer circulating online calls for a gathering on Calle Castillo at 5:30 p.m. on October 31, coinciding with Halloween.
The digital flyer, which uses AI-generated imagery of flares and red smoke, features slogans about reclaiming public space. While it references recent protests in France, the post lacks any clear manifesto, organization name, or contact details, making it difficult to determine if a coordinated group is behind the call.
This incident follows a series of similar disturbances in cities like Barcelona and Bilbao. In Barcelona, protests on October 24 led to property damage, fires, and clashes with police. Similar events occurred in Bilbao on October 26, sparking a wave of viral posts on TikTok, WhatsApp, and Telegram that have since spread to Madrid and parts of Andalusia.
Analysts have noted similarities between these calls and the "Blocus" movement, though experts caution that the timing of these posts does not necessarily prove they are part of a single, organized campaign. Despite the growing concern, there is currently no evidence linking the planned Tenerife gathering to the violence seen in other cities, nor does the flyer contain explicit calls for looting or criminal activity.
