Tenerife Authorities Boost Bus Security Following Surge in Vandalism
Authorities in Santa Cruz de Tenerife are implementing stricter security measures, including increased fines and enhanced driver protections, following a surge of vandalism targeting TITSA public buses.
Recent attacks on public transport in Santa Cruz de Tenerife have sparked fresh concerns over the security of TITSA’s operations. The latest incident involved a group of individuals who damaged the interior of a bus before abandoning it at the Tío Pino stop, an event that was shared widely on social media.
This follows a worrying string of vandalism over the past few weeks. Beyond the financial burden of repairs, these acts disrupt daily service, forcing buses off the road and causing delays for passengers. TITSA maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward such behavior, pursuing disciplinary action and referring cases involving minors to the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office.
In response to the growing insecurity felt by transport staff, island authorities are reviewing safety protocols. The Cabildo de Tenerife has introduced a plan that includes installing security screens, increasing fines to as much as 6,000 euros, and pursuing a legal change that would grant drivers and inspectors the status of administrative authority while on duty.
While the cost of the latest damage is still being assessed, the incident highlights the vulnerability of this essential service.
