Combining vocational training with high culture, students from three Canary Islands schools are crafting intricate set pieces for the Tenerife Auditorium's production of Gounod's 'Roméo et Juliette'.

The Tenerife Auditorium is bringing vocational training and high-level culture together. They've involved students from three schools in the Canary Islands to create parts of the set for the opera 'Roméo et Juliette'. This project highlights how public bodies want to help young people develop practical skills and get into the arts.

Students from IES La Orotava-Manuel González Pérez and IES Mencey Acaymo in Tenerife, plus CIFP Tony Gallardo in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, have made decorative pieces. They used a technique called fretwork on marine plywood. These detailed pieces are for the set of Charles Gounod's opera, which will be staged on March 15, 17, 19, and 21. The work demands great precision and careful attention to detail.

José Carlos Acha, the Minister of Culture for the Cabildo de Tenerife, visited the two schools in Tenerife taking part in the project. At IES La Orotava, he met the director, Nieves Rodríguez; Professor Jonathan Garabote, who helped coordinate with the other schools; and Wood and Furniture department professors Miguel Ángel Arteaga and Javier Barrera, along with some students. Later, at IES Mencey Acaymo in Güímar, secretary Edgard Hernández and Carpentry and Furniture professors Jaime García de Haro and Elena Rupérez explained the training the students received.

This project fits with the goal of boosting training and creating career opportunities for young people. It directly links what students learn in school with real professional work in a respected cultural setting. Being actively involved in building an opera set not only makes their education richer but also gives them a great chance to use their skills in a real and very public way.
