Tenerife Approves Island-Wide Electric Vehicle Charging Network
Tenerife has approved plans for a new island-wide electric vehicle charging network featuring 71 stations to promote sustainable travel and eliminate range anxiety.
Tenerife is moving closer to a greener future after the Island Council approved the plans and regulations for its new public electric vehicle charging network. The project aims to remove "range anxiety"—the fear of running out of power—which is currently the biggest barrier to electric car adoption on the island.
The network will feature 71 charging stations capable of powering 143 vehicles at once. Funded in part by the European Union’s Next Generation funds, the project is designed to reach every corner of the island. Rather than focusing only on cities, the chargers will be spread across tourist hotspots, metropolitan areas, and rural towns like El Tanque and Vilaflor de Chasna. Of these stations, 37 were installed by the Island Council, while 34 were added through partnerships with local municipalities.
The chargers vary in power from 22kW to 150kW to suit different vehicle needs. To ensure the network remains self-sustaining, the Council will use a competitive bidding process to appoint a private operator, meaning the system will run without needing further public funding.
The new regulations, which are now open for a 30-day public review before a final vote this autumn, set clear rules for drivers. To keep traffic moving, users must move their vehicles as soon as charging is finished, and parking spaces are strictly reserved for charging only.
Under the leadership of Island President Rosa Dávila, this initiative is a major step toward making sustainable travel a standard part of life in Tenerife. By building a reliable, accessible network, the Council hopes to make electric vehicles a practical choice for both residents and tourists navigating the island’s unique landscape.
