The Tenerife Island Council has approved a five-million-euro project to reopen the long-closed Plaza de Europa parking lot in Puerto de la Cruz, alongside an additional 1.5 million euros in funding for road improvements across the island.

The underground parking lot at Plaza de Europa in Puerto de la Cruz is finally set for a comeback. The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo de Tenerife) has officially approved the technical project to rehabilitate the facility, which has been closed for years, causing significant parking and economic issues in the town center.

The project, which has a budget of over five million euros, addresses the structural and equipment problems that led to the parking lot's closure. Architect José Moriana Pericet updated a 2021 proposal to meet modern standards for accessibility and heritage conservation, incorporating feedback from local authorities and heritage experts.

Lope Afonso, the island’s First Vice President and Minister of Tourism, described the project as a key part of a broader urban renewal strategy that includes recent improvements to the Paseo de San Telmo and nearby streets. Once reopened, the parking lot is expected to boost local businesses and hospitality while easing traffic congestion in the historic center. The next steps will involve putting the construction contract out to tender and finalizing agreements between the Cabildo and the local City Council.

In addition to this project, the island’s Governing Council has approved 1.5 million euros for road improvements across Tenerife. This funding will cover over 13 kilometers of roadwork:

  • La Laguna: Nearly 500,000 euros will go toward resurfacing 3.9 kilometers of the TF-12, including essential forest maintenance.
  • Garachico: Over 525,000 euros is allocated to renew the pavement and signage along six kilometers of the TF-42.
  • Arona: Approximately 521,000 euros will be used to repair three kilometers of the TF-657 between Aldea Blanca and La Camella.

The island administration expects each of these road projects to be completed within three months.
