The protest stems from an outdated agreement between the animal shelter and the Cabildo. ADEPAC argues that current funding is no longer enough to cover the costs of caring for more than 300 animals. The organization is calling for an updated agreement that reflects today’s operating expenses, which they say is vital to keeping the shelter open.
The situation has also caught the attention of local politicians. The Socialist group in the Cabildo has requested an urgent meeting to demand answers from the presidency regarding the shelter’s financial and operational struggles. Meanwhile, ADEPAC is pursuing a two-part strategy: public pressure through protests and formal legal action led by attorney Felipe Campos Miranda.
While ADEPAC has mentioned potential legal irregularities in how the agreement is being managed, they have not yet shared specific details. The organization maintains that it still hopes to resolve these issues through direct dialogue with island officials to ensure the shelter’s long-term survival.
