The Tenerife Island Council and La Laguna City Council have launched a collaborative redevelopment project to enhance coastal infrastructure while prioritizing environmental protection and sustainable tourism.

The Tenerife Island Council (Cabildo) and La Laguna City Council have begun the technical phase of a project to redevelop the local coastline. This effort is part of the "Tenerife and the Sea" program, which aims to balance tourism with the protection of the area’s delicate environment.

Island Vice President Lope Afonso and La Laguna Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez met at the Island Palace to discuss the second phase of the La Barranquera project. This is the most advanced plan on the agenda and includes upgrading sanitation systems and creating new public spaces. Before work can begin, however, the city must officially transfer land ownership to the island administration.

The two governments are also working on other key coastal areas. Plans are currently underway to improve the coastal path in Punta del Hidalgo, and officials are searching for a technical solution to improve access to El Arenal beach in Bajamar. The latter project requires close coordination between the Cabildo’s tourism and roads departments to meet national coastal regulations. Additionally, the council is reviewing the feasibility of building a boat ramp in Jover, Tejina, with a report currently under municipal review.

These projects are vital for managing the high number of visitors in a municipality known for its Blue Flag beaches while ensuring local biodiversity is protected. Both Afonso and Gutiérrez stressed that the goal is to move beyond simple accessibility improvements, focusing instead on environmental recovery and public safety. This partnership highlights a shared commitment to a sustainable management model that protects the coastline through careful planning and administrative cooperation.
