Tenerife and La Gomera Electrical Link Clears Final Legal Hurdle
The electrical interconnection between Tenerife and La Gomera has cleared its final administrative hurdle, with the two islands set to operate as a single, synchronized power grid starting July 1st.
The electrical link between Tenerife and La Gomera has cleared its final administrative hurdle. A newly signed ministerial order now legalizes the connection, marking a major step toward stabilizing energy across the islands. The Ministry for the Ecological Transition confirmed that this move formalizes the integration of both power grids, with full technical synchronization set to begin on July 1st.
This project is designed to improve how energy is managed in island regions, where separate grids often lead to higher costs and less reliable power. By bringing planning, energy generation, and reserves under one regulatory framework, the system becomes much more robust. For La Gomera, joining a larger network is a significant upgrade, while Tenerife will be able to make better use of the renewable energy potential generated by its neighbor.
Construction of the infrastructure was finished in February, and the new legal order now aligns the law with the physical reality of the connection. From July, the two islands will operate as a single, coordinated unit. This shift will make it easier to integrate new clean energy sources and storage systems. Once the order is published in the Official State Gazette (BOE), the new management model will be fully official, helping to ensure a more secure power supply and lower costs through shared resources.
