The Tenerife Island Council and Granadilla de Abona have signed an agreement to streamline infrastructure development and accelerate the island's transition to clean energy.

The Tenerife Island Council and the Granadilla de Abona City Council have signed a new agreement to manage key infrastructure projects essential for the island’s transition to clean energy. This partnership focuses on overseeing the development of a major project led by the company DISA at the Granadilla industrial estate.

This agreement is a significant step toward ensuring the legal stability of a project considered vital for Tenerife’s energy independence. It sets out a clear plan for both local and island authorities to coordinate urban development, manage land transfers, and oversee the operation of the site. According to island vice president Lope Afonso, this cooperation is crucial to quickly preparing the land needed for new energy facilities, which is a key requirement for meeting the island’s sustainability goals.

Alicia Leirachá, head of the Strategic Projects department, noted that this is the first project in the Canary Islands to combine territorial planning, environmental assessment, and urban management into one document. This streamlined approach is designed to cut through red tape and speed up the timeline, with final approval from the Island Council expected at its next meeting.

By working together, the Island Council and the Granadilla government aim to reduce bureaucratic delays. This ensures that the land required for the energy transition is ready as soon as possible, providing a secure and reliable foundation for the island’s future power supply.
