The mayor of San Sebastián de Tenerife, Colombia, met with the President of the Cabildo of Tenerife to establish a formal partnership focused on tourism, education, and territorial development based on their shared historical and cultural ties.

Jorge Miguel Mercado, the mayor of San Sebastián de Tenerife in Colombia, recently visited the island of Tenerife, marking a new chapter in diplomacy between the Canary Islands and the Colombian department of Magdalena. During his meeting with the President of the Cabildo, Rosa Dávila, the two leaders discussed formalizing a partnership focused on territorial development, education, and tourism.

The connection between these two places goes far beyond politics. The Colombian town, situated along the Magdalena River, was named by Captain Francisco Enríquez to honor Pedro Fernández de Lugo, a 16th-century figure central to the history of the Canary Islands. While the two locations share a name, their demonyms differ: residents of the Spanish island are known as tinerfeños, while those in the Colombian municipality are called tenerifanos or tenerifenses.

Their shared history runs deep. Both regions have rich pre-colonial roots—the Guanches in the Canary Islands and groups like the Malibúes, Chimilas, and Karibes in Colombia. Additionally, both locations were visited by the famous naturalists Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland during their historic expeditions.

This visit highlights how the Canarian influence in Latin America remains a living part of the culture. From the colonial urban planning inspired by La Laguna to these enduring cultural ties, the two regions are now looking for ways to turn their shared history into a practical partnership for the future.
