Tenerife Allocates €1.2 Million to Restore Historic Icod de los Vinos Convent
The Tenerife Island Council has allocated 1.2 million euros to restore the 17th-century Franciscan Convent of the Holy Spirit in Icod de los Vinos as part of a broader initiative to preserve the region's historical heritage.
Efforts to restore architectural heritage in northern Tenerife have received a major boost. The Island Council (Cabildo) has officially allocated 1.2 million euros to the Icod de los Vinos City Council to renovate the former Franciscan Convent of the Holy Spirit. This project, part of the 2023-2027 Island Historical Heritage Program, is funded by the Strategic Framework for Island Development (MEDI-FDCAN) to preserve the 17th-century building.
The total cost of the restoration is estimated at approximately 2.2 million euros. To support the project, the Cabildo will provide 400,000 euros annually between 2026 and 2028. This amount represents the maximum funding allowed under island regulations for municipalities of this size, highlighting the project's strategic importance.
Cabildo President Rosa Dávila emphasized that this investment is part of a broader development strategy, noting that the restored building will help enhance the area’s cultural and tourism appeal. Isabel de Esteban, the island’s director of Historical Heritage, added that the work will follow strict technical protocols to ensure the convent’s historical integrity is protected.
These public investments are required by the Canary Islands Historical Heritage Law, which mandates the preservation of sites that define the archipelago's cultural identity. Through this initiative, Icod de los Vinos aims to integrate the historic convent back into the community, turning a centuries-old landmark into a vibrant space for residents and visitors alike.
