Tenerife Airports Get Expert Advice for Major Renovations
Tenerife Island Council approved a €230,000 contract for expert advice on Aena's airport renovations, ensuring the modernization projects meet the island's needs for efficiency, quality, and sustainability.
A team of experts will advise Aena on the upcoming renovations at Tenerife's two airports. The Tenerife Island Council approved a €230,000 contract for this service yesterday.
This specialist team will support the Council's involvement in developing plans for the terminal areas and surrounding spaces at Tenerife South (Reina Sofía) and Tenerife North-Ciudad de La Laguna (Los Rodeos) airports.
The three-year contract, worth €230,185, means the Council will have access to architects, civil engineers, and aeronautical engineers. They'll provide technical support during the design and construction of the new terminals Aena is planning as part of the Airport Regulation Document (DORA) for 2022-2026.
Rosa Dávila, the Council's president, said this move "strengthens Tenerife's position" in modernizing its airports. She added that it ensures the new terminals meet the island's needs, with a focus on "efficiency, quality, and sustainability."
Dávila highlighted the recent inclusion of both airport projects in DORA III (2027-2031) as "a historic success" for Tenerife, unlocking over €800 million in investment. This includes €550 million for a complete overhaul of Tenerife South Airport and €250 million for expanding and improving Tenerife North Airport.
"These projects don't just modernize our terminals," she explained, but also "boost Tenerife's tourism and economic competitiveness." This is due to "improving the passenger experience and contributing to the sustainability and efficiency of our infrastructure." Dávila concluded that the advisory contract ensures the Council can rigorously oversee the projects, guaranteeing public investments are "executed with the highest quality and for the benefit of the citizens of Tenerife."
The plan for Tenerife South involves increasing the airport's size by 50%. This will be achieved by adapting the facade facing the roads, creating a new check-in area and remote boarding lounge, and increasing capacity with new technology. The design will integrate the terminal with its surroundings. At Tenerife North, the terminal building is set to expand by 40%. Work will focus on expanding the check-in area and number of counters, improving security, increasing the number of boarding gates, and expanding the baggage claim area. The project will also improve parking and access to the airport, coordinating with planned upgrades to the TF-5 North highway.
