Tenerife Accredits 26 New Artisans to Preserve Cultural Heritage
The Tenerife Island Council has officially accredited 26 new artisans to help preserve the island's cultural heritage and promote the long-term sustainability of traditional local crafts.
The Tenerife Island Council has officially added 26 new artisans to its registry. This is more than just a routine administrative update; it is a strategic move to protect the island’s cultural heritage and local economy. By supporting these traditional trades, the council aims to keep them viable in an era dominated by mass-produced goods.
The accreditation process was managed by the Island Craft Company and the Ibero-American Museum of Crafts of Tenerife (MAIT). The new artisans received their certificates at the La Recova Art Center during the ‘Sobremesa’ exhibition. The ceremony was attended by Island President Rosa Dávila, representatives from the Santa Cruz city council, and officials from the departments of Education, Employment, and Youth.
Earning this official status is no small feat. Candidates must pass a rigorous assessment by a panel of 21 experts. Out of nearly 100 applicants across 34 specialties—including jewelry, weaving, carpentry, and ceramics—only 26 met the high standards required to carry the ‘Artesanía de Tenerife’ brand. This strict vetting process ensures that the quality and authenticity of Tenerife’s crafts remain competitive in the global market.
The new group of artisans reflects a healthy balance in the industry, with 14 women and 12 men receiving accreditation. Councilor Efraín Medina highlighted this gender parity as a key factor in the sector's long-term sustainability, noting that these trades are vital for social cohesion and local job creation.
Looking ahead, the Island Council is focused on professionalizing these crafts to ensure they remain a viable career path for younger generations. The goal is to provide artisans with the resources they need to reach new markets beyond the island, helping them grow their businesses while preserving the traditional techniques that define Tenerife’s unique identity.
