Teide National Park Transitions to Solar Power, Eliminating Diesel Generators

Teide National Park has transitioned its El Portillo public facilities to a sustainable solar microgrid, eliminating reliance on diesel generators and reducing pollution in the protected area.

Teide National Park has taken a major step toward greener energy by replacing traditional diesel generators with a new solar power system. According to the Canary Islands’ Ministry of Ecological Transition and Energy, public facilities between El Portillo Alto and El Portillo Bajo are no longer reliant on fossil fuels.

The project, carried out by the public company Tragsa, cost 500,000 euros and was funded by the European Next Generation program. The new setup uses an isolated microgrid that combines solar panels with battery storage. This allows the system to store excess energy during the day, ensuring a reliable power supply at night or when it is cloudy.

Minister Mariano Zapata stated that the move is designed to balance public service needs with the protection of the park’s fragile environment. By removing the old generators, the park has eliminated a source of pollution in a protected area while also cutting down on the high maintenance costs and logistical challenges of the previous system.

This initiative is part of a wider regional plan to bring clean energy to public buildings. The government views the El Portillo project as a successful model for installing modern, sustainable infrastructure in protected or remote areas, proving that clean energy can replace outdated, traditional power sources.
