Teide National Park’s Altavista Refuge to Reopen July 2026 Following €1.9 Million Renovation
The Altavista Refuge in Teide National Park will reopen on July 20, 2026, following a 1.9-million-euro renovation focused on sustainability and modern infrastructure.
The Altavista Refuge in Teide National Park is set to reopen on July 20, 2026. After being closed since late 2019, the facility has undergone a comprehensive 1.9-million-euro renovation, marking a new chapter for the site.
The project focused on modernizing the refuge to make it more sustainable. Key upgrades include a 59.5-kilowatt solar power system with battery storage, which reduces the need for fossil fuels and limits the environmental impact of helicopter supply deliveries. Additionally, a new wastewater treatment system has been installed to protect the park’s fragile ecosystem.
Located at an altitude of 3,260 meters, the refuge has a long history as a base for scientists and mountaineers, dating back to 19th-century astronomical expeditions. In this new phase, the facility will offer 49 beds for guests, plus four additional spaces reserved for emergencies.
To protect the environment, access is strictly regulated. Guests are limited to a one-night stay and must book through the official online platform. Pricing is tiered: 71 euros for non-residents, 56.80 euros for non-resident federated mountaineers, and a discounted rate of 29 euros for island residents.
Given the extreme high-altitude conditions, the refuge includes a nursing station and basic medical services, with permanent coordination provided by the 112 emergency service. The management team aims to balance public access to the summit with the safety and preservation of this sensitive natural area.
