Tegueste Celebrates Canary Islands Day with Focus on Local Economy and Heritage
The town of Tegueste is hosting a series of cultural and commercial events from May 28 to 31 to celebrate Canary Islands Day while boosting the local economy and supporting neighborhood businesses.
This year, Canary Islands Day in Tegueste is about more than just official ceremonies; it is a key opportunity to boost the local economy and bring the community together. According to the town council, the events running from May 28 to 31 aim to celebrate local heritage while supporting neighborhood businesses—a strategy many Canary Island towns are using to encourage residents to shop locally.
The program features a variety of events across the town. Cultural activities kick off on Wednesday, May 28, with a literary event by Raquel Perdomo at Casa Prebendado Pacheco, which will also host a book presentation by Clara Rufino on the 30th. Performing arts highlights include the play "Piel con piel" at the Teatro Príncipe Felipe on Thursday, May 29 (reservations required), a theatrical tour by Burka Teatro in the Plaza de San Marcos on Saturday, May 31, and a performance by the San Marcos Evangelista Musical Group at the same location.
To support the local economy, the council is partnering with GMR Canarias. On Thursday, Calle Prebendado Pacheco will host a commercial event featuring a prize wheel to encourage shoppers to buy "kilometer 0" local products. On Friday, May 30, the focus shifts to the Farmers' and Artisans' Market, which will feature workshops on the traditional card game "Juego del Envite," a cooking demonstration of watercress stew by chef Diana Marcelino, and raffles through the Talega app.
Mayor Norberto Padilla noted that these events are vital for strengthening the town's identity, while Commerce Councilor Maura Martel emphasized that the program is designed to give local businesses more visibility. The schedule also includes children’s activities in the Plaza de San Marcos on Thursday, May 29, rounding out a celebration that blends family fun with support for the local economy.
